Sunday 15th September – bike **** Bradford-on-Avon to Devizes –
sunny.
Another good night at Bradford-on Avon, the annoying generator on a narrow
was turned off just before we went to bed and a few people walked home from
the pub through the car park but they were well behaved so didn’t disturb
us. After yesterday’s early start, we had a bit of a lay in, leaving the
van today at 10.30 on our bikes, this time heading towards Devizes. We
thought that this section of the canal would be quieter as most people
probably head towards Bath. As yesterday there are loads of boats moored up
that are in pretty poor condition being permanently lived by people
searching for an alternative lifestyle which is fine but the sad thing is
the mess they make, boats more like Steptoe’s yard with their mess
spreading onto the canal banks, it’s a shame that the Canal and Rivers
Trust don’t tighten up things and make them clear up their mess! Let’s
get the moaning out of the way at the start, the tow path seems to attract
aggressive mountain bikers flying along with little regard for other
bikers/walkers and it’s no wonder that you get the look of death when you
try to pass many walkers and we are just ambling along enjoying the
scenery, lastly what the attraction of groups of men going on holiday on a
narrow boat looking bored and drinking a lot! Still back to today, the
scenery isn’t so picturesque as yesterday but still nice set against
another blue sky with whispy clouds with only the old lock, bridge or
marina to pass. We see that Devizes is 12 miles so try for there with the
highlight of the trip a small community garden in the middle of nowhere at
Bowerhill. Then at Caen Hill we come to the biggest flight of locks in
England, a row of 16 each feed by a large pond great for birds and fish.
This is a popular spot with people out for a Sunday walk being close to
Devizes but as it’s a slow uphill slog for us it’s not a problem. We
stop at the top of the run for our picnic before heading into Devizes, to
say in was underwhelming is an understatement and we were in and out in 5
minutes flat and I had a job to take a picture of something to say we were
there!!! Not a patch on the lovely Bath and all we had to do know was bike
the 12 miles back! To tell you the truth it was hard going especially after
yesterday’s epic ride, we stopped for a break at Bowerhill Garden which
was even nicer when sitting in it. We learned that it had suffered from
some vandalism, the leaves had been picked completely off one bush and a
picnic bench broken, the world is just full of mindless Moran’s who seem
to get pleasure by spoiling things for others let’s just hope they get
what they deserve one day and Karma catches up with them! We have never
been so pleased to eventually see the van after being out 5 hours covering
25 miles, it’s Mag Birthday tomorrow and hopefully we can take it a
little easier, perhaps an amble around the NT Abbey at Lacock with some
cake at the tea room:)
